PLANNING PROCESS

Citizen Participation in the AHUP Planning Process

Residents and planners participating in the 9th Ward recovery planning process were committed to a highly participatory approach to community planning. This commitment prompted them to organize regular community meetings to review and discuss the findings and recommendations emerging from the planning process. Beginning in November 2005, a total of six community meetings involving more than 750 residents of the 9th Ward participated. These meetings assisted project planners in identifying important research questions, refining their data analysis, and focusing their planning recommendations. In addition to these community meetings, AHUP planners engaged in ongoing communications with ACORN members and leaders from the 9th Ward, benefiting from their knowledge of the local conditions and resident recovery priorities.
