PLANNING PROCESS

Securing Community Support for and Official Endorsement of the Peoples' Recovery Plan for the 9th Ward

On January 6, 2007, AHUP participants presented a detailed summary of the Peoples' Recovery Plan to a group of more than 12 local officials. Among those attending this session were State Senator DuPlessis, City Council President Oliver Thomas, City Council Vice-President Arnie Fielkow, and City Council Member Cynthia Hedge-Morrell. They strongly supported the overall goals and objectives of the plan, offered specific proposals for strengthening the plan's recommendations, and urged AHUP's representatives to present the plan to the full membership of the City of New Orleans Council. Following the January 6 presentation, AHUP representatives made a similar presentation to more than 100 9th Ward residents who indicated enthusiastic support for the 9th Ward plan.

On February 1, 2007, AHUP representatives presented the Peoples' Plan to the full membership of the City of New Orleans Council. Following this presentation, the Council voted 7-0 in support of a resolution, offered by Councilwoman Cynthia Willard-Lewis, to accept and endorse the Peoples' Plan and request that the City Planning Commission incorporate this historic document into the city's soon-to-be-adopted master plan.
